Bow Ribbons (NYC), Squirrelhead and potluck goodness at the Office of Dr. Glorious
Hey,
So we are having a last minute show for Bow Ribbons (www.myspace.com/bowribons) from New York this Friday.
Also playing will be our new roommate Squirrelhead (www.myspace.com/squirrelheadlove), who will be playing her first show since adventuring around Europe and maybe one other.  This is going to be a really laid back living room show and hell, let's even have a potluck.  Bring some food to share and share some food others brought.  Maybe we can all go for a night swim after the show is over.  Please help spread the word because this is really last minute.  Show starts around 8pm and please bring a couple of bucks for the out of towners!

Thanks!

The Seattle Really Free Market is a monthly event that happens in opposition to the "Free Market" which really isn't free. Everything at the Really Free Market is FREE. Nothing is for sale, trade or barter! It is a place for people to congregate and bring things to the community they no longer need or use. Sometimes people even give free massages or haircuts or whatever other skill or services they want to donate. Usually other organizations come and donate their services, also. The Really Free Market is nothing without your participation! Come and bring things you don't need that can be re-used. The Seattle Really Free Market happens on the last Saturday of the month.

LA LUNGS
L.A. Lungs was formed in the summer on 2005 in a Tacoma studio apartment by Afterthought Lung (nee Nathan Markiewicz) and Leeward Lungs (nee Lori Peterson). What began as a "studio" project became a "functioning" live act in the summer of 2006, with L.A. Lungs making their live debut at the now defunct No Tomorrow series in Seattle.

L.A. Lungs continue to perform around the Pacific Northwest and have been fortunate enough to share bills with artists such as Acre, Bird Costumes, Wesley Borden, Cabinet of Natural Curiosities, Crank Sturgeon, The Dead Air Fresheners, Steve Fisk, Forest Friends, Gowns, Bill Horist, Josh Hydeman, Derek Johnson, Mattress, Myr Myr, POWRFL POWER, Racooo-oo-oon, Scard, Shearing Pinx, Talbot Tagora, Your Drugs My Money, and others.

In 2008 L.A. Lungs will be releasing albums for Debacle Records & Aphonia Recordings.

DEREK M. JOHNSON
Aphonia Recordings is pleased to once again welcome cellist Derek M. Johnson to our stage. In performance, Derek often marries cello with an arsenal of electronic gadgetry & projections to produce unique sonic collages. Likewise, his paired-down
A prolific performer, Derek has played with the Tacoma Symphony, the Olympia Chamber Orchestra, Opera Pacifica, Le Ton Mite, Unwound, Tom Swafford, Encyclopedia of Fun, The Dead Air Fresheners, Blood Clot,
Thollem McDonnas, Arrington de Dionyso, Katsura Yamauchi, and many, many more. Over the years, Derek has been a key organizer & performer with the Olympia Experimental Music Festival & has made appearances at the Northwest Film Forum, Olympia International Film Festival, & Palais Ideal.

THE PRECAMBRIAN
Aphonia Recordings founders, Ben L. Robertson & Andrew Senna team-up as The Precambrian. In concept, The Precambrian is a constantly evolving interactive synthesis environment/instrument, engineered by Robertson using the graphical programming language, Max/MSP.

In its current incarnation, The Precambrian utilizes a "slide zither" & various pitch recognition algorithms to coax out microtonal intervals derived from a graphical system of 11-limit, just intonation matrices. In performance, Senna (armed with a handful of homemade piezoelectric transducers, microphones, & field recordings) executes a series of absurd one-act narratives & vocal onomatopoeia, indicative of both his sound design work for film & theater.
A collage-style collection of live performances by The Precambrian is due out on Aphonia Recordings later this year.

The first show hosted at the House of Zanzibar.  We're hoping to help pick up some of the slack caused by the unfortunate recent losses of Dearborn and The Ark.

This is a hell of a first show though:  Eli Mardok, lead singer / songwriter of Eagle*Seagull, will be playing a solo set, as well as Mighty Tiger, Mrs. Gray, and Jeff Raynor.  There will also be art, dance, and dramatic readings.  So really everything you could possibly want to see will be happening.

BOUND FOR GLORY - based on the life of Woody Guthrie
AUGUST 5 - 6, Tuesday - Wednesday at 7, 9:30pm
BOUND FOR GLORY
(Hal Ashby, USA, 1976, 35mm, 145 min)

Based on the life of Woody Guthrie, BOUND FOR GLORY explores the social, economic and political hardships that molded the legendary folk singer’s beliefs. Beginning with his life in Texas and his terrible experiences in the Southwest Dust Bowl, the film follows Guthrie as he moves to California to begin his radio career. There he discovers the political power of music, which he harnesses by writing and singing his own songs. BOUND FOR GLORY broke new ground as the first feature film in which the Steadicam was used. For his brilliant work, director of photography Haskell Wexler took home an Oscar. The film, which was produced by music promoter Harold Leventhal, was also recognized for its score, which was based on Guthrie's own music.

"Elegantly crafted, hugely beautiful and interesting film, which reveals loving integrity in every frame." -LOS ANGELES TIMES

Magic Lantern Presents Forever by Heddy Honigmann (Frye Art Museum)
A documentary portrait of Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. While beautifully photographing the graves of the famous (Chopin, Proust, Modigliani, Oscar Wilde) and the humble, Honigmann examines the living—pilgrims, widows, tourists—who haunt the graveyard, tending graves or memories. Peering into their worlds, she discovers the depth of their feelings about the departed; the result is, in her words, “a film about how beauty can console, forever.” This is a lyrical, constantly surprising look at—to quote Père-Lachaise resident Jim Morrison—”the end.”

UW Campus - Thomson Hall, Room 134

Anarchism 101 raises and answers some basic questions about anarchism: what is anarchism? what would an anarchist society look like (hint: there's not just one "anarchist society")? has anarchism succeeded before?

We aim to have as much participatory time as possible while also giving attendees some basic foundation for further exploration of anarchism.

  SUMMER OF '68 REVISITED
AUGUST 22 - 24
SUMMER OF '68 REVISITED

A Texan was in office; the US was entrenched in war; there was a hotly contested Democratic presidential campaign in which both candidates opposed the war, sought social reforms, and sought improvement in civil rights in America. Inside a convention building, delegates voted for their presidential candidate, but they did not choose the candidate who had done well in the early primary elections. Instead they chose the more traditional candidate. Sound familiar? This short series, slated just days before this years’ Democratic Convention, delivers a films from 1968, and a return to an era both similar and dissimilar to our own.

AUGUST 22 - 24, Friday - Sunday at 7, 9:15pm
MEDIUM COOL
(Haskell Wexler, USA, 1969, 35mm, 110 min)

Talk about WILD IN THE STREETS! Oscar-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler (WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, BOUND FOR GLORY) produced, directed, wrote and shot this very cool, very radical end-of-the-60s artifact, a cinéma vérité-style drama set against — and actually filmed during — the infamous 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, where hippies, Yippies and other anti-Vietnam War protestors engaged police in bloody battle on the city streets. Robert Forster (JACKIE BROWN, MULHOLLAND DRIVE) plays a detached TV news cameraman who becomes conscious of the political and ethical ramifications of his work when the FBI begins using his footage to identity militants.

“One of the most devastating and technically sophisticated anti-establishment films ever made. Taking its title almost straight from mouth of media guru Marshall McLuhan…[MEDIUM COOL] film remains a landmark of political cinema and an insightful essay on the ‘cool medium.'” -James Monaco, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FILM

SUMMER '68
(Norman Fruchter and John Douglas, 1969, BETA, 60 min)

Fruchter and Douglas craft a compelling document of the events leading up to the volatile 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Focusing specifically on the growth of the radical movement in the U.S., the film presents the struggle for students and activists to find a proper medium for their message.

CHICAGO CONVENTION CHALLENGE
(Newsreel Collective,  USA, 1968, 17 min)

Using newsreel footage taken in the midst of demonstrations against the Vietnam War during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, this film conveys the immediacy of anti-war organizing in meeting rooms, at rallies and in the streets. It is a valuable historical portrait of events that culminated in police riots against the protesters.
