| WTF? Wednesdays! February 3 - 17, 2010 This quarter, Wednesdays in February are devoted to recent explorations in experimental cinema, focusing on three American filmmakers whose recent work represents major trends in durational cinema, hand-painted filmmaking and films that blur the line between abstract and documentary. It is rare for works such as these to find much play outside of the festival circuit, but we felt strongly that these films should see the light (or in our case cloudy light) of Seattle’s day. RR Seattle Premiere Feb 03, 2010 (James Benning, USA, 2008, 16mm, 111 min) In 1895, the first film audience ever reportedly ran screaming from the theater during the Lumiere brothers’ The Arrival of a Train. Although today’s moviegoers may be more comfortable with train footage, James Benning’s RR promises a unique kind of cinematic experience for audiences. When It Was Blue Seattle Premiere Feb 10, 2010 (Jennifer Reeves, 2008, USA, DigiBeta, 60 min) Jennifer Reeves’s epic, years-in-the-making When It Was Blue presents an experience of a world that is both visceral and fleeting. Photographed in 16mm over many years in various waters and terrains, an elaborate montage connects diverse ecosystems spanning from the northeastern USA, to Iceland, Canada’s Pacific coast, New Zealand and Central America. O’er The Land Seattle premiere Feb 17, 2010 (Deborah Stratman, 2008, USA, 16mm, 52 min) O’er the Land is Deborah Stratman’s meditation on freedom and technological approaches to manifest destiny. She captures the marching-band battle cries of the country with a strong, controlled tone that proves its point but is also extremely playful. |

| Cris Cheek Live Feb 11 Co-Presented with University of Washington Bothell Thursday, Feb 11 at 08:00PM Cris Cheek is a sound artist, poet, photographer, mixed-media practitioner and interdisciplinary performer. He will perform an evening of “live writing” or “performance writing” works for sound, text and video. Cheek writes that he “projects video about writing and gets in the way of his projections, tries to read the writing, toys with and enacts ideas of trying to read what we might be seeing and changes what is seen by doing so.” His work, indebted to the history of sound poetry, is highly improvisational and ephemeral. One of the works he will be presenting, the video-text-performance piece “monday morning quarterbacking ‘on’ and ‘off’ gods commons,” has appeared on many “best-of” 2009 lists for experimental poetics. He will also be presenting other short videos, live sound pieces and readings from his acclaimed new book “part: short life housing” (The Gig, Toronto, 2009). |

Serj Tankian Elect the Dead Symphony Serj Tankian – Elect the Dead Symphony Feb 20 (Madsen Minax, U.S.A. / New Zealand, 2009, Beta-SP, 62 min)
On March 16th, 2009, Serj Tankian, a Grammy Award winner and one of rock’s most unconventional frontmen, took the stage at the majestic Auckland Town Hall in New Zealand with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to perform a very special orchestral interpretation of his critically acclaimed debut solo album Elect the Dead. The dynamic one- off performance was recorded and filmed in HD by six cameras, and the dramatic result has been captured in Elect the Dead Symphony. With the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra at his side, Tankian’s epic songs and operatic vocals take on a whole new sense of grandeur when performed by a full 70-piece orchestra, while the film’s sweeping edits showcase the drama of the concert. This unique meshing of two very different musical worlds was a vision Tankian has long wanted to make a reality. What sets Elect The Dead Symphony apart from other successful pairings between rock artists and orchestras is that Tankian specifically rearranged his songs to be performed with only orchestral instruments. |

| Report Night Hi Everyone, It's time again for Report Night, this month Friday, February 26 from 6:30-9:30 in Beacon Hill (shoot my an e-mail for the address so that we can get a head count). Of course the basic premise of Report Night is that you pick a topic of your choosing, have some type of learning aid to go with it (visual, audio, food, etc) and then you spend 5-10 minutes presenting on it. And really it can be anything. Some examples from last Report Night were: - Yves Klein (learning aid paintings and youtube video) - Tarrot Card (learning aid power point presentation) - Invasive Species (learning aid pictures of species) If you're interested in reporting, please e-mail me back so I can add you to the list. I usually write here that "you can't come if you're an asshole." And yes, please keep the ass-holery at home, but also we're trying to promote a Safer Space (i.e. checking racist, homophobic, sexist, etc. comments) while also assuming positive intent. Cheers!
