Hot Toddies @ Cafe Fusion
Saturday, August 7th, indie surf pop darlings The Hot Toddies will be performing at Fusion Cafe, a little known, yet wonderful, all ages venue in the heart of downtown! If you’re in the know, then you’ve already been here to see one of the numerous national touring artist that has performed here in the last year and a half. But if not, here is your chance! . For all you avid KEXP listeners our there, you’ll remember The Hot Toddies from back in 2007 when their last album was released and they got major airplay on the station. In fact, they even did a great live in-studio performance (that you can listen to here). I think that the band’s bio gives the best description I have heard of them yet: “Oakland’s sweethearts,The Hot Toddies, mix 1950’s beach pop with indie rock riffs, a bottle of whiskey and a dry sense of humor.” . Along with the Toddies, a bunch of other great local bands will be performing. There will be great acoustic sets from Chris Crusher (of Smokejumper, who were recently named one of the next 5 Seattle bands to get signed), Jefferson Death Star (Ryan Koreski from the Damage Done, another band who was also on that list mentioned above), MT148 (melodic singer/songwriter indie with inspirations ranging from the Weakerthans and Apple Seed Cast to the Murder City Devils), and Arms Like Cables (two guys playing together that sound like Chuck Ragan)! In short, it’s a show you don’t wanna miss. And do note…IT STARTS EARLY! 7PM. . So, be sure to come out out if you love bands that “[blend] 60’s pop, doo-wop, and beautiful harmonies,” or local music. Either way, you will not be disappointed! . Saturday, August 7th The Hot Toddies (http://www.myspace.com/thehottoddies) Chris Crusher (of Smokejumper) Jefferson Death Star (http://www.myspace.com/therealjeffersondeathstar) MT148 (http://www.myspace.com/mt148) Arms Like Cables @ The Fusion Cafe (909 4th Ave) $6 – 7PM

Vincent Moon Retrospective at Northwest Film Forum
Vincent Moon Retrospnwfilmforum.org
AUGUST 20-26, 2010 Director in attendance! His real name is Mathieu Saura, but it's under the name of Vincent Moon that music fans from all over the world know the 30-year-old filmmaker, who has reinvented the music video as a documentary. After studying under photographers Michael Ackerman and Antoine D'Agata, the young music aficionado became increasingly interested in moving images. The combination of music and film could easily have ended in MTV-land. But according to Moon, the usual music video has long been stuck in this limited marketing world. Starting in 2006 with his Take Away Shows, Moon has offered a non-commercial alternative: small, short films that capture musicians in the alleys, hallways and elevators of the real world, without amplifiers or special effects. The Take Away Shows paved the way for larger film projects and Moon's far-reaching résumé, which now includes concert films and documentaries, all equipped with the special shadow/light aesthetic that give his images a special abstract quality. Moon's greatest strength may be his ability to capture music without superfluous embellishments. He is a sonic adventurer, constantly seeking new musical treasure chests. He not only discovers, he participates, with his camera as an instrument: while in Seattle for this retrospective Moon will, with a single extended tracking shot, produce a new one-shot film with local Seattle musicians. Take a workshop with Vincent Moon: Lyrical Filmmaking: The Art of Documenting Musicians with Vincent Moon |

Conspiracy Tour
Wayward Vegan Cafe, 5253 University Way NE, Seattle $5-15 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds. All proceeds go to legal support. This summer, the Conspiracy Tour is going on a whirlwind, month-long excursion across the continental United States to raise awareness of and solidarity for political activists from Minneapolis, MN who are facing severe state repression. Come join us in raising political support and much-needed legal defense funds for the RNC 8 and Scott DeMuth.
It’s been alleged that the Tour will include a musical puppet show, a scintillating p...resentation on the charges the activists are facing, and various (some would say nefarious) ways you can join the Conspiracy to support targets of state repression. In addition to the usual perks of joining a conspiracy, co-conspirators will be learning ways to strengthen and protect their communities from future incidences of state repression. You know, just in case.
Come find solidarity, strategizing, resistance, and community that the state could only dream of! This will be a roadshow to remember even before you read about it in your FBI file.

Art & Copy
Co-Presented by Capitol Hill Seattle Blog Aug 21 - Aug 27 (Doug Pray, USA, 2008, DigiBeta, 86 min) Acclaimed documentary director Doug Pray (Hype!, Scratch, Big Rig) introduces us to some of the most influential advertising visionaries of our time and sheds light on the tricky interplay of art, commerce, and human emotion. Rare interviews with industry legends reveal the stories behind the big campaigns that turned simple phrases into larger cultural concepts, from Volkswagen’s “Think small” to Apple’s “Think different” to Nike’s “Just Do It.” |

Teach Out! Engaging the Local Food Cycle - Laughing Crow Farm
Teach Out! Engaging our Local Food Cycle AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT AND WORK FOR A LOCAL COMMUNITY FARM Coordinated by the Food Justice Project of the Community Alliance for Global Justice Fourth Event of 2010! Laughing Crow Farm - Bainbridge Island, WA Sunday, August 22nd, 10am-3pm (with optional potluck after!)
CAGJ’s Food Justice Project invites our members and others to learn about and build connections with key players in the local food region through monthly visits to farms, community kitchens, and community gardens! The site visits will include hands-on work that is needed by or is appropriate to the sites, opportunities to debrief and reflect at the end of the site visit, and calls to action! Each visit will allow for carpool options and many will also feature a bike route guided by a CAGJ member. Through these visits, CAGJ hopes to facilitate a place for the voices of our local food producers to be heard and their knowledge and skills to be recognized and celebrated. Laughing Crow Farm, one of the Day Road Farms on Bainbridge Island, is part of the island's oldest working landscape and largest working farm. The land has been farmed since 1928, when it was cleared by the Suyematsu family. Today, it is among the sixty acres of public farmland managed by Friends of the Farm, a nonprofit that works to promote farming and farmland preservation on Bainbridge Island. The Day Road Farms also collaborate with Global Source Education to teach local students about sustainable agriculture. After visiting the farm, Teach Out participants are invited to a potluck on the South end of the island for food, fun, friends, and all the blackberries you can pick! **Please note, space is limited, so RSVP's are required. To sign up, fill out the online form here. If you have any questions, please email Molly at mollyjade@gmail.com. We will send you directions and carpooling details upon receiving your RSVP, as well as information about what to wear and bring. All activities will be appropriate for children and we can work out disability accommodations if needed. |

Yoga for Bikers
Riding bikes is the best way to get around town, but riding without stretching out can leave your muscles tight and sore. This engaging yoga class focuses on loosening up leg muscles and opening hips, while leaving your body balanced and open. I incorporate aspects of several yoga traditions, blending vinyasas, static poses and breathing. All levels welcome. Sliding Scale $10 @ Fremont Abbey, Trades Welcome
