  WTF? Wednesdays!
February 3 - 17, 2010

This quarter, Wednesdays in February are devoted to recent explorations in experimental cinema, focusing on three American filmmakers whose recent work represents major trends in durational cinema, hand-painted filmmaking and films that blur the line between abstract and documentary. It is rare for works such as these to find much play outside of the festival circuit, but we felt strongly that these films should see the light (or in our case cloudy light) of Seattle’s day.

RR

Seattle Premiere

Feb 03, 2010

(James Benning, USA, 2008, 16mm, 111 min)

In 1895, the first film audience ever reportedly ran screaming from the theater during the Lumiere brothers’ The Arrival of a Train.  Although today’s moviegoers may be more comfortable with train footage, James Benning’s RR promises a unique kind of cinematic experience for audiences.

When It Was Blue

Seattle Premiere
Feb 10, 2010

(Jennifer Reeves, 2008, USA, DigiBeta, 60 min)

Jennifer Reeves’s epic, years-in-the-making When It Was Blue presents an experience of a world that is both visceral and fleeting. Photographed in 16mm over many years in various waters and terrains, an elaborate montage connects diverse ecosystems spanning from the northeastern USA, to Iceland, Canada’s Pacific coast, New Zealand and Central America.

O’er The Land

Seattle premiere

Feb 17, 2010

(Deborah Stratman, 2008, USA, 16mm, 52 min)

O’er the Land is Deborah Stratman’s meditation on freedom and technological approaches to manifest destiny. She captures the marching-band battle cries of the country with a strong, controlled tone that proves its point but is also extremely playful.

Presented by Northwest Film Forum and AIGA-Seattle
Sponsored by CapitolHillSeattle.com

Normal 0 0 1 115 661 5 1 811 11.1282 0 0 0

ByDesign explores the intersection of graphic design and moving image, and celebrates multidisciplinary artists who push the boundaries to create new techniques, styles and forms. Over the past decade, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting a great number of special guest artists, and presenting hundreds of new and historic films. We’ve seen new technologies developed, old techniques revived and watched as interest has grown in this overlap of design and film.

The tenth annual ByDesign program features a range of film title sequences, animations, documentary portraits and guest presenters. We are especially pleased to present films by Charles and Ray Eames, as the work of the legendary multi-disciplinary husband and wife team was the main inspiration for our starting this program a decade ago.

Veracity Feat. Painted Horses, Jim Lee Hiskey Jr., and Mike Giacolino
Hey Folks! Veracity is here again!

This Wednesday, March 10th, will showcase another batch of fine local music in the gallery space at the Vera Project. This month we have a great lineup! Show starts at 7:30.

Painted Horses - Local Americana-drenched bop-around-the-room type of music. Check out their song 15 Years to get a taste! Bring yr friends and yr dancing shoes!!!

Jim Lee Hiskey Jr. - Lead singer of Ocean of Algebra (www.myspace.com/oceanofalgebra) but flyin' solo for Veracity! Who knows what'll happen!!! ADVENTURES!

Mike Giacolino (www.myspace.com/mikegiacolino) returns to Veracity once again!! What a voice!! Singer/songwriter who is quiet and reflective without being melancholy. Check out his song A Welcome Home to get a better feel for it.

So, incase you haven't already been to Veracity(!) yet, here's the scoop:
• it's free. that's right, free.
• there's great music. All performances for Veracity(!) take place in the gallery space of the Vera Project, not the main stage (read: intimate show)
• it's awesome to show up on time for this show. We try to run on real-world time, not punk rock time.

If you don't already know where the Vera Project is, it's at the corner of Republican & Warren.

Any questions? Want your band to play Veracity?? if so, email veracity@theveraproject.org

Mar 13

(Various, 2008/2009, 100 mins)

One day Randy Walker's bought a filmmaker friend lunch. Instead of owing him a lunch in return, he wondered why not make a film for that same money? The two made a napkin contract with “rules” to follow. Now 50 "Lunch Films" have been commissioned. Like a menu, the series has a wide variety of tastes and styles, from languid, real life documents to vibrant fiction to pure art.

All proceeds will go to the Duwamish Tribe which will be used for their legal fund. The tribe is suing the federal government for recognition--asking to reverse a 2001 Bureau of  Indian Affairs decision that the tribe had gone extinct. The Duwamish Tribe was recognized at the end of the Clinton administration--only to have that positive determination overturner by the incoming Bush administration. Recently the tribe was granted a 6 month extention, to raise $100,000 to hire an expert witness to review 31,000 pages provided by the BIA.  For more information visit the Duwamish Tribe's web site www.duwamishtribe.org.

  Anti-War Protest in Seattle!!!
March 20th, 2010 will mark the 7 year anniversary of the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan by the Bush administration. With all the domestic issues we have been dealing with lately, it seems like many Americans have become complacent and accepting of our involvement in the middle-east but it's time to wake up and remember! It is now clear that the new administration has no intention of trying to remedy these grievous atrocities or hold anyone accountable for the war crimes that are still being committed every day in our names.

Hundreds of billions of dollars, thousands of American lives and over a million civilian casualties are just the tip of the iceberg. The wide-spread use of depleted uranium and white phosphorus (aka. nuclear and chemical weapons) by U.S. forces are devastating the populations of these countries and will continue to poison the land causing birth defects, mutations and death for years to come. Not to mention the effects that exposure to these substances has had on the U.S. troops that are coming home with abnormally higher rates of cancer, radiation sickness and the ambiguous "Gulf-War Syndrome". We are committing murder, genocide and numerous other human rights abuses every day in violation of the Geneva conventions and international law and it is driving this country into the ground.
51% of you federal tax dollars currently go to fund these occupations while our country is drowning in debt!

It's time to wake up, stand up and fight back against this madness! Join the march to end U.S. Imperialism and be part of a global day of protest! Bring your friends and spread the word!

End US War and Occupation! Fund Human Needs!

  Really Really Free Market!
Seattle Really Really Free Market
Last Saturday of every month
12-4pm @ Pratt Park
20th & Yesler in the CD

The Seattle Really Free Market is a monthly event that happens in opposition to the "Free Market" which really isn't free. Everything at the Really Free Market is FREE. Nothing is for sale, trade or barter! It is a place for people to congregate and bring things to the community they no longer need or use. Sometimes people even give free massages or haircuts or whatever other skill or services they want to donate. Usually other organizations come and donate their services, also. The Really Free Market is nothing without your participation! Come and bring things you don't need that can be re-used. The Seattle Really Free Market happens on the last Saturday of the month.

  WTF?
