About this website, and how to use it:

About the website:

SeattleDIY.com is intended to be a hub of information and resources for the DIY community in Seattle.
* We have a community calendar that anyone can add events to, as well as a list of weekly regular events and monthly events.
* On our main page we’ll be keeping track of community news, posting it here so that we can all stay informed and better able to support each other.
* We work to keep track of what DIY and community-oriented venues and projects and organizations exist in town.
* The SeattleDIY Collective is going to be actively working on highlighting an issues each month and creating a page with information and resources for that topic. For example, we chose the issue of Food Justice for December.
* The collective has been working on a number of zine projects that we publish, and we aim to host the zines on this website also, keeping them in a wiki format that anyone can edit. We’re going to make pdf files of our zines that will make it easy to download and print them yourself.
* We have a message board / forum that people can use to connect with others in the DIY community.
* Flickr – we have a flickr group, so if you have a flickr account you can add your photos to the flickr group and the 8-most-recent will show up on our main page. flickr.com/groups/seattlediy
* Twitter – We’re working out how to have a twitter account that the community can update. More details to come. http://twitter.com/seattle_diy

How to use this website:
Make a user account! In the upper right corner there is a link to register a user account. You’ll need an email address (which we will not use to spam you or anything) and you’ll have to verify it.
With your account you’ll be able to post news items on the front page (please keep it relevant – we’ll moderate them!) and post in the forum.
Even without a user account, you’ll be able to comment on any of the pages, and you can add an event to the event calendar.

To add an event to the calendar, go to the DIY Event Calendar then click on Edit/Add Event. Please read the rules and criteria for posting an event, and please don’t include a big picture. We’ll generally remove pictures to make the calendar load faster (a lot of people use it), even if your flyer is really cool. (If you have a flyer that you want to promote, add it to our flickr group!!) Click “Edit Calendar” on the rules page. The log-in is “seattle” and the pw is “diy”. Then click on the “Add Event” button in the upper-right corner of the page.
When adding an event: Make sure the category of the event is correct. Don’t leave out information: who/what, where, and when. We prefer events that are donation-based, but please specify if it isn’t (be aware of legal recourse for mandatory entry-fees without a banquet or business lisence). Otherwise assume that events are $5-suggested sliding-scale donation.

Please be aware that we don’t get paid to do this – this is purely a labor of love. We spend our own money on everything we do and spend lots of volunteer hours. Please try to keep this simple and easy for us. Thanks!

How this website was built:

We are hosted through AN Hosting.
This site is built using WordPress (wordpress.org), using the carrington theme and a bunch of widgets.
The calendar system is EasyPHPCalendar (easyphpcalendar.com), which we bought a registered copy of.
This was built by Benji, with contributions and invaluable input from Seth, Jenna, Garrett, and others.

One Response to About this website, and how to use it:

  1. Hello,

I’m the program coordinator at The Art Affect and we are organizing a Summer of Solutions program here in Seattle. The SOS program will connect young people to projects in the Seattle area that are providing solutions to our current environmental and economic issues. Participants will be trained in various journalistic mediums and will gather information and images to create a DIY guide at the end of the summer. Seattle DIY is an awesome organization and fully in alignment with our values at the Art Affect and Summer of Solutions.
I’d love to talk with someone about Seattle DIY’s current projects and explore opportunities for collaboration or participation.

Email me at thedrivingforces@gmail.com when you have the time.

    Love & Gratitude

    Barbara Jefferson
