Events of the last weekend of March

First of all, we want to start using this blog space for the community to write about what’s going on in the DIY community and about things that affect the DIY community. This won’t be a space to just promote events (you can do that on our community calendar), rather a space to give more context to the events, to review particularly amazing events that have happened recently or further in the past, and to provoke discussion about how we can live up to our wants and needs more fully and authentically. If you want to write for this blog, let us know – create and account here and send an email to sdiycollective at gmail. com, and describe what you’re interested in and what you want to write about.

Earlier today was the Really Really Free Market. Unfortunately, it was soggy and cold all day, which always affects the RRFM. Still, we hung out in the rain-shelter, and there was a ton of clothing, some delicious vegan garbanzo-salad dip, a cool mobile-infoshop with a bunch of zines and literature, and some of the attendees played basketball to get the cold out of their fingers. We’re all looking forward to future months when it gets warmer. The Next Really Really Free Market is on April 25th, at Pratt Park (20th and Yesler) from noon-4pm.
Seattle Really Really Free Market!

Tonight is the last night of Hollow Earth Radio‘s Magma Festival! Magma Fest is an annual fundraiser that they do to pay for their operating costs, as well as their ability to move forward into bigger and brighter frontiers. Tonight the show is at The Mine (5113 Russell Ave NW), in Ballard, and the following bands will all be playing: Pierced Arrows, Strong Killings, Victoria Galinsky, 1985/Matt Fuller, Yellow Hat Band, Orkestar Zirconium, Douglas Filkoe & Iji. Should be fun!

Sunday night there’s two really good shows in the Capitol Hill area. First, there’s a benefit for Left Bank Books at The Holy Mountain. It’s mainly hardcore and noise bands, all fairly recent local bands, and a good variety within those nebulous genres. Asymmetric Warfare (hardcore), Same-Sex Dictator (metal/hardcore), Physical Demon (noise), Silhouettes! (drone/noise), Witches Of…! (two-piece, two women, too awesome), and possibly more bands will play. Bring some dough to donate to Left Bank Books, everyone’s favorite anarchist book store, who have been around in Seattle for 35 years (daaaamn!).

Also on Sunday night is a show at our favorite little collective punk house in the center of Capitol Hill, Dancylvania, with Tubers, Old Growth, Biography of Ferns, and Jason Clackley. Tubers and Old Growth are from Florida and Portland, respectively, and both have members of the old critically-underrated “emo” hardcore bands Twelve Hour Turn. On this tour Tubers also has Matt Sweeting playing guitar, from other old No Idea! records bands Strikeforce Diablo and Asshole Parade. Old Growth sounds like a cross between Jawbreaker and Bruce Springsteen – dope! Biography of Ferns has been around for a while, and are really good post-punk with a new drummer, Evan (aka, Seattle’s Sexiest Sex Educator 2008!). Dancylvania is at 110 Harvard Ave E, a block behind Dick’s on broadway.
