This Sunday (January 31st) is Get Hella Baked with Quality Papers- one of your local arts & crafts & baking groups. This weeks will be special since there will also be a Hollow Earth Radio work party in the garage as we prepare for Magma Fest 2010. If you want to get involved with Hollow Earth, this is a good and very helpful way to do it.

We will also be chasing Erin around the house (see video above). We’ll be gettin’ our craft-on, maybe bakin’ a cinna-bon ’til the lowering of the dawn… Well, not really the dawn thing. It’ll be from 12:00PM – 12:00AM like the last few times. You can show up whenever and we can stay up super late.

Bring art supplies if you can, a list of people to write letters to, recipes of delicious things you want to make.

Vegan pierogi group dinner?

Margaret Killjoy, editor of Mythmakers and Lawbreakers, will be reading and talking at Left Bank Books on Friday, January 29th at 7 PM.

Left Bank is at 92 Pike Street, on the corner of Pike and 1st, at the entrance of the Pike Place Market.

From Killjoy’s blog:

A brief and arguably entertaining evening with Margaret Killjoy, editor of Mythmakers & Lawbreakers. Discuss the role of storytelling in the anarchist movement! Learn about novelist assassins, post-colonial African squatters, writers who fought in revolutions and went on to write childrens’ stories! Find out what Tolkien, Camus, Orwell, and Kafka have to say about anarchism!
January

From AK Press (on the book):

The best fiction has always been a little…dangerous. For centuries, authors have used the veil of fiction to cast a critical eye toward the larger society around them: think of Emile Zola, Victor Hugo, Issac Asimov, Margaret Atwood, Aldous Huxley, J.R.R. Tolkien, H.G. Wells, Mary Shelley, and beyond. And now, for the first time, some of the biggest names in contemporary fiction discuss the endless possibilities of the world of fiction with a specific focus on anarchist politics.

In a series of interviews with SteamPunk Magazine founder Margaret Killjoy, Ursula K. Le Guin, Alan Moore, Lewis Shiner, Starhawk, Derrick Jensen, Cristy C. Road, Michael Moorcock, and a variety of other up-and-coming young writers reflect on the ways in which their personal politics have shaped their work. Plus, a fantastic introduction by best-selling sci-fi author Kim Stanley Robinson!

Be there!

SECRET CAFE!
Do you love books and zines? Spaces for diy culture? How about non-hierarchical and anti-authoritarian organizing? What about eating
delicious food with friends in support of all this? On Sunday, February 14th, SeattleDIY is putting on a secret cafe to support our collective work, and the new L@s Quixotes Infoshop/Lending Library in Seattle! SDIY will be serving up a hot dish of lovin’ along with a smoothie bar (!), sweet jamz, photobooth, dancing, and plenty of information on the infoshop and our favorite diy projects in Seattle. Look inside the newsletter for the full details, and send an email to sdiycollective[at]gmail[dot]com to reserve your seat.

FREE FOR ALL
The Really Really Free Market is back in action! We took a little break over the winter, but as of January 30th, we will be in Pratt Park every last Saturday from 12pm to 4pm to hang out and share things and skills. Nothing at the free market is for trade or barter – it’s really free! We’re also always looking for friendly folks to spread the word, bring food and hot drinks, and help us cart everything away at the end of the day. We would also like to give a shout out to all the Food Not Bombs free markets around town that distribute groceries every weekend – listed in the Regular Events.

HUNTING FOR BIGFOOT
The SeattleDIY Collective is going on a retreat! On February 20th and 21st, we will be hanging out in a cabin in Sasquatch territory to talk about our mission, the projects we have going on, what we want to be doing in the next year and tell spooky stories. This also means there will be no meeting at Healthy Times on Sunday the 21st, because we’ll probably be driving back… If you have any thoughts or suggestions, this is a great time to tell us!

LONG LIVE ALL-AGES MUSIC
We would also like to bid a fond farewell to the Department of Safety, our northerly neighbors in Anacortes, Washington. After eight lovely years of shows, artist residencies and po-mo-festos, the DoS held their farewell ceremony on January 30th 2010. Though we’re sad to see an all-ages stronghold go, we look forward to what the members will do next.

And hey – here a benefit event for ZAPP at Fantagraphics Books:
This Saturday, January 30, 6-9 p.m., Fantagraphics Books presents the release party for “NEWAVE! Underground Mini Comix of the 1980s,” a new book compiling self-published mini-comics of the ’70s and ’80s, at their store in Georgetown.
For every copy of “NEWAVE!” sold at the party, Michael Dowers, the book’s editor, will donate $3 to ZAPP.
The “NEWAVE!” release party features original artwork from Jaimie Alder, Jim Blanchard, Wayne Gibson, David Lasky, Wayno, Steve Willis, Dennis Worden and XNO. Dowers, mini-comics creator and former editor of Starhead Comix and Fantagraphics Books, will be creating and distributing a mini-comic on site. Plus, an allstar comics jam with music by hot Seattle indie rockers Iji.
For more info, visit the Fantagraphics Web site.

———————–
